Emulates CGA, VGA or Tandy displays. This is not a desktop multi tasking emulator but it installs on the icon bar and you can move between the desktop and DOS. Emulation is not quite as full as the Acorn emulator, but the price is a LOT more reasonable and means that an Archimedes owner on a limited budget can now access the vast range of PC Shareware without needing an overdraft. Works with 1.44Mb discs and VGA monitors. Has a 'built in' 128K RAMdisk in high DOS memory (very useful if you only have 2Mb and no hard disc), full serial port emulation and EMS (Expanded Memory) support Even if you already have Acorn's PC Emulator !FasterPC has a more 'lively' feel which makes many programs more useable so it's well worth having. This is particularly noticeable with WP's and Editors and, of course, games run a lot faster and make the right noises. They can both share the same DOS partition on your hard disc. I normally use !FasterPC and only 'fall back' on Acorns emulator for programs which won't run (not many now). !FasterPC is still under development. I have tested it and haven't had any difficulties so am happy to recommend it. What few problems with specific applications have shown up are either already fixed or being worked on. However as it is supported directly by the Author if you have any problems he may be able to help and because it's under continuing development it will get even better in the future. NOTE 1 !FasterPC does NOT come complete with DOS. Elsewhere you'll almost certainly find it cheaper to buy locally. ·------------------------------------------------· | | | ArcFS -- Vertical Twist *** £25.00 *** | | | ·------------------------------------------------· {£1.50} This is, in my opinion, the BEST compression system for the Archimedes. It's less than half the price of CFS without all the complications of two icons for every drive and gives better compression. It is also much easier to mix compressed and uncompressed material on the same drive and directory. It's faster than SparkFS and simpler to use. The disadvantages is that it isn't so transparent as CFS (but I consider that an advantage, not a disadvantage) and it can use its own archives (although it can read Spark archives) whereas Spark can operate with various 'foreign' formats. Most people will be familiar with ArcFS from APDL discs and all the other libraries and magazines so you will already know how easy it is to use. The official price for ArcFS from Vertical Twist is £24.99 + £2 carriage + VAT which comes to £31.71. Because I think this is such a good system my all-inclusive price is ONLY £25, nearly seven pounds cheaper. ·----------------------------------------------------· | | | Game On - From the ARM Club - *** £14.50 *** | | | ·----------------------------------------------------· Version 2 {£0.50} Having trouble running games on a RiscPC? Fed up with 'letterbox' screens? This could be the answer. From those nice people at the ARM Club this will help solve problems caused by programs (primarily games, but many graphics based programs, especially demo's). It won't make everything work but it will stop most of the 'Address Exception' errors caused when games programmers take shortcuts and directly address some portion of memory which has 'moved' on the RiscPC. Will correct some of the strange colours which appear and also stop many games running at double speed when used with high frequency monitors as used on the RiscPC Absolutely essential if you have upgraded and have a collection of 'old' software. ·--------------------------------------------------------· | | | Artworks -- Disc or CD -- *** £99.00 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------------· {5.00} The famous (and still probably the best) art package. This is the new, dongle-less version (I would NEVER sell software with a dongle) so it won't screw up your printer port. ·--------------------------------------------------------· | | | Impression Style -- *** £79.50 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------------· {5.00} I probably won't be keeping Impression Publisher but Impression Style is all that most people will need and is extremely good value. ·--------------------------------------------------------· | | | Powerbase - Derek & Stephen Haslam *** £15.00 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------------· This is s fully registered version of the powerful Powerbase database as described in the main catalogue (B160). It also includes the Admin Suite from B160-A. This is slightly more expensive that buying the disc(s) and then registering (registration normally costs £10), but the adavantage is that you get a 70 page laser printed Manual plus a printed version of the Powerbase Tutorial. Normally these are only available as text files on disc. This really is a bargain price for what is one of the best general purpose databases available for Acorn computers at ANY price, and now for the first time you can get it 'ready to run' in a commercial package. Note that normally only the RISC-OS 3 version of Powerbase is available in this way. Please specify 800K or 1.6Mb discs when ordering. ·-----------------------------------------------· | | | F18 HORNET -- Quantum *** £7.50 *** | | | ·-----------------------------------------------· Two disc set. Complete version of the flight simulator program from Quantum with five missions. The demo version with only a single mission is available on disc B131. Probably superior to the commercial game Interdictor ·-----------------------------------------------------------------· | | | ClicBack -- Steve Spry -- *** £12.50 *** | | | ·-----------------------------------------------------------------· Fully registered version of the hard disc backup program from Steve Spry. Allows full, differential or incremental backups either to floppies or another hard disc (Syquest?). Lots of other features including data compression, partial restore, etc. Latest version has several bug fixes (now handles Image files correctly so will back up your PC partition) plus many new features inlcuding a 'don't compress' list so it won't waste time trying to compress things like Archives. Includes a laser printed Manual PLEASE NOTE - £10 of this price goes directly to the Cancer and Leukemia In Childhood trust. The balance covers our costs including the cost of the Manual. Alternatively you could get disc B242 and then Register, which would cost you almost as much but you wouldn't get a printed manual, although CLIC will get the same money. ·-----------------------------------------------------------------· | | | Pro Copy -- David Holden -- *** £15.00 *** | | | ·-----------------------------------------------------------------· Fully registered version of the multiple disc copier which can save an image of a floppy disc to your hard disc so that making repeat copies is extremely quick and easy. A very early version of this program, named !Copier, was published by Archimedes World and is widely used by clubs, user groups, and even software houses, for distribution discs. The next best thing to an expensive autocopier. This program can easily be adapted to operate with low cost autocopiers which use the computer's disc controller and are controlled via the serial or parallel port. Complete with laser printed manual. ·------------------------------------------------· | | | Amstrad NC100 Link -- David Holden | | | | With Lead - £15.00 *** No Lead - £8.00 | | | ·------------------------------------------------· The registered version of the Shareware program on disc B310. Can be supplied with or without 1.5m lead to link the NC100 to an Archimedes. Includes laser printed manual. ·------------------------------------------------· | | | Z88 Link -- David Holden | | | | With Lead - £13.00 *** No Lead - £6.00 | | | ·------------------------------------------------· The registered version of the Shareware program on disc B228. Can be supplied with or without a 1.5m lead to link the Z88 to an Archimedes. ·-------------------------------------------------· | | | Easy C -- Risc Developments *** £50.00 *** | | | ·-------------------------------------------------· {£2} This isn't as comprehensive a compiler as Acorn's DDE C package but is is certainly very good and MUCH better value (DDE C will set you back nearly £200). Lives up to it's 'easy' name and has a very good manual which doesn't assume any previous knowledge of C. Comes with RiscOSLib library plus a specially compiled version of the PD Desklib library. Now also has a debugger, which will be useful to both novice and experienced programmers. If you want something 'more' than Basic and feel that 'Charm' (see below) isn't suitable (or if you want your programs to be portable) then Easy C could well be the answer. Highly recommended. ·----------------------------------------------------· | | | Easy Font -- Fabis Computing *** £25.00 *** | | | ·----------------------------------------------------· {£1} Probably the best font management system for Acorn computers. It's a bit more expensive than the PD or Shareware equivalents, but in my opinion the best of the commercial offerings. At APDL prices it's over £5 cheaper than the normal price - and it's been described as very good value for money even at the full price! Fonts are easily switched in and out of use from a menu, so you can have them all readily available but don't need to see your entire collection (possibly hundreds!) in the Publisher font menu. There's also a font preview window so you can see what the font looks like if you can't remember. Lot's of other features far to numerous to mention. If you have lots of fonts then you need this program ================= ========================= G A M E S ======================= ================= ·-------------------------------------------------· | | | Star Fighter 3000 - Fednet *** £23.00 *** | | | ·-------------------------------------------------· {0.50} You've probably read the reviews, so you will know that this is one of the best games around, and at APDL prices it's not expensive (normal price £29.99 + post). 108 levels, good graphics, great action. Get it! ·--------------------------------------------------· | | | Fire and Ice - Graftgold *** £15.00 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------· (1.50} Probably one of the best platform games ever - and incredibly cheap. At the Wakefield show one young customer who wanted a demonstration had to be prised away from the computer by his father so he could go home! This game is meant to sell at £25.99 - so it's a real half-price bargain. ·--------------------------------------------------· | | | Cannon Fodder - Krisalis *** £21.50 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------· {1.50} OK, so there's not such a huge discount on the price of this game, (normal price £25.99) but it's VERY good. I strongly suggest that you cover the furniture and carpets before playing to stop it getting bloodstained. Definitely NOT for pacifists ·--------------------------------------------------------· | | | Lotus Turbo Challenge - Gremlin *** £21.50 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------------· {1.50} Probably the best racing game available. Doesn't work on the Risc PC ·--------------------------------------------------------· | | | Crystal Maze - Sherston *** £24.50 *** | | | ·--------------------------------------------------------· {1.50} This is based on the popular TV program and has all the challenges you will find there. Normal price is £39.95 + carriage, so it's quite a bargain ·----------------------------------------------------------· | | | Simon the Sourcerer - Gamesware *** Disc £32.50 *** | | *** CD £38.50 *** | | | ·----------------------------------------------------------· {1.50} This has been hailed as one of the best graphical adventure games available on any platform. Really good graphics and animation and taxing puzzles. Available on CD or no less than nine floppies, but although a hard disc is recommended it is can be played from floppies. It's expensive (normal prices are £39.99/£45.99 for disc/CD) but the best often is. New items TWAIN - £19.00 (2 points, specify version) IMAGE MASTER - £28.00 (2 points) IMAGE MASTER plus TWAIN - £35.00 (3 points, specify which ver. of Twain) NB Twain is available in three versions 1. Epson GT8000, 6500 2. Canon IX (inc Scan Light Pro.) 3. HP Scan Jet II, IIc, IIcx Arcfax £30.00 (2 points) In conjunction with a fax-modem this lets you send and recive faxes from the Archimedes desktop. It has often been reviewed and described in various magazines so I shan't bother with a description of all its features. Spell £9.00 Stand alone or interactive spelling checker. Can check while you type. Comes with small and large (200,000 word) dictionaries. Lots of features. Holds dictionary in RAM so you don't need a hard disc. Takes ~300K if you use the standard dictionary but you can reduce this considerably by removing words you don't need. Lets you 'check as you type' with wp's like FWP or even !Edit and it can check WW+, View and many PC wp files. Charm £24.00 (2 points) Compiled high level language combining many of the best features of C and Pascal. Complete with assembler, linker and editor (although the editor's non desktop). Fast, compact, and unlike other compiled languages can be run from a single 800K floppy with only 1Mb RAM. Produces compact executables with no 'external' libraries. The new version is much improved and comes on two discs with a printed manual and a Profiler. The manual is a lot better than the previous version on disc and makes it much easier for the inexperienced programmer to get to grips with the language. I haven't had time to evaluate it properly but I intend to try writing a 'real' application with it and see how I get on. I don't claim Charm will replace Acorns DDE package but as well as being a good compiled language in its own right it also serves as a cheap introduction to 'C' or Pascal without spending £250 for DDE C as it uses some similar constructs. Produces fast, compact code and is suitable for writing 'real' applications. Highly recommended. *** Latest version now has floating point support *** I still have a few copies of the 'old' version of Charm. This is the same compiler with linker and editor but on a single disc without printed manual and profiler *** While stocks last ONLY £7.50 *** CrossStar £9.00 Crossword puzzle solver. Can be used to solve existing crosswords or to make it very easy to compose new ones. Trace £9.00 Converts Sprites into Drawfiles which are easily scaled and edited and take a lot less space than sprites. Works with colour sprites. Also included is D2Font which converts Drawfiles to Outline Fonts. An essential tool if you do DTP work as you can convert sprites into Drawfiles before incorporating them into documents. This means that they will be displayed much faster and can be scaled, rotated etc. more easily. SparkFS £22.00 (2 points) Latest version of Spark which can read ARJ, ArcFS, PKarc, PackDir, Zoo, Zip, Packit, Stuffit, tar, LZH etc. Has advantages over ArcFS and in many ways is better than CC's Compression. I don't use it for APDL discs because the 'PD' de-archiver, SparkPlug, is not as good as the equivalent for ArcFS, but for personal use it's extremely useful and essential if you want to import PC files or download stuff from a BBS or the net. Chess £9.00 Multi tasking version. Lots of features. Play against computer, computer against computer (a schizophrenic Arc?) or two players. Save/load game, edit board, on screen clocks etc. I'm told this is the best version of chess on the Arc at any price and I wouldn't want to dispute it. No flashy graphics, just plays a good game - and it's FAST. Chess II £16.00 (2 points) This is an improved version of Chess with a printed manual, flashier 3D graphics, and various other options and improvements. It is not a replacement for the earlier version, just a major update. If you are a serious player this is probably the version you will want. Even though it's more expensive it's still a lot cheaper than the (inferior) alternatives. Panorama £9.00 Produces maps outlining continents with lakes, boundaries, rivers etc. as Drawfiles. You can make your own maps of any part of the world for DTP etc. Does simple, cylinder, Mercator and perspective projections. StarChart £9.00 Uses a database of 9000 stars to produce Drawfile star maps and also calculates the positions of the planets. **** May be discontinued shortly so buy NOW if you're interested **** ·-------------------------------· | | | -=-=-=- Smart DTP -=-=-=- | | | ·-------------------------------· Smart DTP provide a variety of resources for general DTP work and particularly for use in schools. All material is good quality and, as the discs are archived using ArcFS and reasonably priced, they are good value for money. The full Smart DTP catalogue is available for £1 on DP102 (it's in the DTP catalogue because it is full of 'sample' clipart and other stuff), but APDL is keeping stocks of some of the Smart DTP 'home grown' material which we will sell (as usual) at BELOW the standard price. All give 1 Bonus point unless stated otherwise. Publish Art £33.00 3 Bonus points Eight discs containing more than 10Mb of top quality resources for DTP work. There are all types, from simple 'corners' to full colour shaded margins and headers. A wide assortment including eight sets of 'drop caps'. Smart Graphics pack #1 £14.00 Two more discs of general purpose clip art for use in DTP. Colour Fun £14.00 A disc of assorted colour drawfiles designed for use by young children or for educational use or as illustrations for documents aimed at children. If you want any other items in the 'Smart DTP' catalogue disc DP102 APDL will supply items priced at £14.95 for £14 and items priced at £9.95 for £9 ======================================= =================== C O M M E R C I A L D E M O S ====================== ======================================= These are demonstration versions of commercial software. Many are functional with restrictions. For example most playable demo's of games have only a couple of levels instead of 50 or more in the full game. Software producers - This is a cheap and powerful way of spreading the good news about your products. No matter how much money you spend on colour ads in magazines it's not nearly as persuasive as giving someone a 'demo' version and letting them use it. If the program is any good they'll get 'hooked' and you've made a sale. If it doesn't do exactly what they want perhaps you won't sell a copy but you won't have a dissatisfied customer who feels he/she has been persuaded to buy something they didn't really want. Instead they will be pleased with your service and happy to consider your products in the future. Prospective purchasers - By PC and Mac standards software for Acorn machines is cheap. However it's a good idea to try a program at leisure before parting with your money rather than relying on reviews and a five minute demonstration in a shop by a salesman who may be more interested in getting you to part with your cash than pointing out that the best product for your needs is the one he doesn't stock. If a company doesn't produce a demo of a major application so you can't 'try before you buy' then ask yourself WHY and try those that DO first ALL SOFTWARE IN THIS SECTION IS COPYRIGHT. You are permitted to use it to evaluate the program to help you decide whether you wish to purchase it. Before passing on copies of any software please read any Copyright messages on the disc. Some items have not been sent directly by distributors. We normally confirm there is no objection to programs being distributed but it is possible we may have something to which a distributor objects. Three demos, two playable, of games that can be created by this software - !Demo, !Breakout and !Shootem. D503 SCORPIUS from Arxe Systems. This latest version is now playable. PROVOCATOR from CTS. A fully playable 3 level demo. BAMBUZZLE from Arxe Systems. Once again fully playable. D504 Fully playable demo of AGGRESSOR and a non playable demo of AIR SUPREMACY set in the 1914-18 scenario. D505 Two playable demos. JAMES POND from Krisalis Software and 2067BC from Oregan. D506 Fed up trying to save Lemmings? At last here's your chance to get your own back and kill some little furry b*@%#$er's for a change. A three level playable demo of PESKY MUSKRATS PLUS a useable demo of the NOTATE music program D507 A fully playable demo of PSYCHEDELIC ROCKERS from Green Angel Design. D508 VECTOR drawing package v1.10. A working demo version of the program from 4Mation but with the Save function disabled. Vector is the enhanced commercial version of Jonathen Martins Draw Plus on disc B060 PLUS 4Mations DBEdit desktop Basic editor. The nicest Basic editor I've seen. Fully operational except that the Save and Run functions are disabled. Before buying another editor have a look at this. D509 PIPEDREAM 3 demo. Fully functional except you can't save or print. This has now been supeseded by Pipedream 4 (see next disc) but it's still available, often very cheaply, so if you are thinking of buying Pipdream it might be worth looking at both before you choose D510 PIPEDREAM 4 demo. As with the previous disc this is fully functional except that you can't save or print your work. Once again Save is disabled. D515 SMART from 4Mation. An interactive program designed to help in teaching. This demo has a variety of example files of objects which can be examined and manipulated, House, Robot, Church, Windmill etc. D516 SMART from 4Mation. PLUS 3D CONSTRUCTION KIT A 'working' demo from Domark. D526 IMPACT database from Circle Software. Almost the full program but 'crippled' so it can't create databases but only use the sample included (a simple name and address type). Otherwise it's functional. You can enter data and use it, ie. everything works so you can print labels, load and save etc. To 'unlock' the extra features you phone Circle Software, credit card at the ready, they give you a code and send the printed manual. Impact can be used for mail merging with Impression using Impulse and exchange data via the Acorn CSV format. At nearly £50+VAT Impulse seems a bit dear for a straightforward dbase (compare with £10 for Power Base). However there would appear to be no bar to using it in the form on this disc indefinitely so worth a look. PLUS CADet = A functional demo version of the CAD package from Minerva. Most features are useable but you cannot save your work. Comes with an example drawing. Imagery = A useable demo of the art package. As usual the Save function and some others have been disabled. D528 Micro Trader = Working demo of the accounts package from PRES. Some functions are disabled. It is not possible to save anything, the VAT is disabled, only part of a report can be printed and you can't print any invoices that you create, only the samples. All the main functions work so it gives a good idea of the product. D529 Demo version of the DIGITAL SYMPHONY editor/player from Oregan which is probably the best program of this type available for the Arc. Completely functional except you can't save your work and it quits after a short time. Comes with seven demo Symphony tunes. D539 RESULTZ The successor to Pipedream. Again Save and print are disabled. D540 FIREWORKZ This is a combination of Resultz and Wordz and can be used as a wordprocessor with full spreadsheet functions or visa versa. Unlike Pipedream it really is a fully functioning wp. Operates in the desktop and has a maximum drawing size in excess of A0 with up to 8 layers. Can print to HPGL plotter or output in DrawFile format for printing via the Risc OS printer drivers although these functions are disabled in the demo version. D544 INTERNATIONAL GOLF Playable demo version of the golf game from Q-Soft HAMSTERS Non playable demo of the game. MORPH FACES A demo showing four 'morphing' faces created with Oregon Software's MORPHEUS program GUARDIANS Single level playable version of Guardians of the Labyrinth from Soft Rock. 3D CHESS Playable version of the desktop chess game from MicroPower. This game is only 'crippled' in that it's 2 player only, you can't play the computer. D545 Detritus Demo. This is a 'cut down' version (only nine screens) of what would appear to be a graphics adventure game. Apparently the full game occupies six discs. The Authors don't seem to think it's worth writing proper instructions (and what there is seems rather puerile and somewhat lacking in punctuation), but what can you expect from a company that calls itself Myndgaemz and doesn't mention the price of the full product? (Must be ex-A***a owners!) D546 Sibelius 6 and Sibelius 7. Demo versions of what is probably the best music composing/processing programs available. These are functional except that you can't Save or Print your work. D547 FIREWORKZ PRO The 'professional' version of Colton Software's Fireworkz package. Has extra features and functions.
